The purpose of this study was to examine the influences of family health, academic stress, and peer relationships on adolescents’ depression. The subjects, 325 middle and high school students in Incheon Metropolitan City and Gyeonggi Province, completed a self-report questionnaire. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, the level of adolescents` depression was below average. Second, the difference between boys and girls appeared in peer relationships. Girls had more positive peer relationships than boys had. Boys had more negative peer relationships than girls had. Finally, both the positive and negative peer relationships exerted influences independently on boys` depression, whereas family health, academic stress, and negative peer relationships exerted influences independently on girls` depression. The more positive peer relationships increased, the lower the level of boys` depression was. The more negative peer relationships increased, the higher the level of both boys` and girls` depression was. In addition, the higher the level of family health was, the lower the level of girls` depression was. The higher the level of academic stress was, the higher the level of girls` depression was. This study suggests that programs designed to strengthen family health and positive peer relationships and to decrease negative peer relationships and academic stress of adolescents should be developed and implemented to protect adolescents from depression.
