This study focuses on the formation of the term ‘정신분석학’(Jeong-sin-bun-seok-hak, psychoanalysis). ‘정신분석학’ is a translated term of german ‘Psychoanalyse’ and japanese ‘精神分析?’. The word ‘정신분석’ is a compound word which composed of ‘정신’ (mind, spirit, psycho-), ‘분석’(analysis), ‘학’ (study). Thus, ‘정신분석학’ means ‘a study which analyses patient’s mind’. It seems clear that the word itself shows what ‘정신분석학’ aims and how it works. However, some questions can be raised; how the word ‘정신분석’ was translated and why ‘정신’ was chosen among various korean terms that have the meaning of ‘psycho-.’ In this paper, the questions will be examined in historical, linguistical and ideological view.
