Generally speaking, the relationship between being and nonbeing is regarded as opposite. But if we think it over more deeply, we cannot but recognize they are indivisible each other, for everything[being] inevitably fades into nothing[nonbeing]. In this context, it was declared by Buddhism that phenomenon was full of nothingness and vice versa. It has been verified by the quantum theory. And by Zen’s view we can call it[being] filled with the emptiness itself.
Wallace Stevens also maintained that “the visible is the equivalent of the invisible” in his The Necessary Angel: Essays on Reality and the Imagination. Therefore if we consider daily life by referring to his mention, both love and hate, light and darkness, life and death, and all those opposite things can be construed as oneness. It is persuadable because there is always changeability between them. In conclusion, Stevens’ poetic view is similar to that of Zen.
