The topic of The Square by Choi In-hun is to discuss how Liberation and the Korean War divided the systems and ideologies of North and South Korea from the perspective of political and social changes in 1960. Its narrative development process is to depict a young man"s intellectual and emotional confusion and trace how he made a tragic choice according to his confusion. In the novel, the topic and the narrative are in multi-level relations. Broadly speaking, it has something to do with the phenomenon of the interpretations of his novel being manifested in asymmetrical relations between ideology and love. If Lee Myeong-jun"s choice of system and resulting travel derive from the issue of the wrongly transplanted ideology like it appears on the surface, his love for Yun-ae and Eun-hye will be most resolved at the level of his personal history. If they reveal mutually close reciprocity or rivalry relations, there will be mediating operation hidden under the surface between the topic and his personal narrative. This study set out to explain the connected relation with regard to the bourgeois" understanding of the world as “cultured citizens.”
Having experiential limitations with understanding a state, the young man Lee Myeong-jun understands the divided system as ideology and finds the ground for his judgment in Western culture considered as universal knowledge. This culture is not only the product of modern Western history, but also the symbolic political and cultural capital of the bourgeois. It reflects a critical perception of the established reality and works as the defining power of the social foundation itself. There is the publicity power of the bourgeois inherent in Lee"s move from his cool-headed self-criticism to system criticism. It covers up real relations and is manifested as a pursuit of ideal ideology, thus showing the process of personal desire becoming public. He makes an ideological choice mainly for his disillusionment of fictionality found in the ideological orientation of North and South Korea, but his choice is, on the other hand, also due to his unstable social relations that drive him towards the choice. The findings of the study demonstrate that he is motivated to move to another zone of influence by his bourgeois attitude in political awareness and his relation of depending on the bourgeois economically and that it can explain his conflicts with his father, the heterogeneity of his love for Yun-ae and Eun-hye, and the meanings of his choice of a neutral nation and his death.
