This article investigated Korean EFL learners’ interlanguage with regard to the production of complex wh-questions employing long-distance wh-movement. It asked what alternative structures Korean learners of English would produce in their attempts to make complex wh-questions and whether and how alternative structures would change as learners" L2 English proficiency increased. Sixty-two Korean EFL learners in two proficiency groups participated in a written production task designed to elicit English complex wh-questions. Results showed that: 1) overall, Korean learners resorted to a variety of alternative structures such as wh-scope marking structure, structures with one or two short wh-movements, and wh-in-situ structure, among others; and 2) in general, less proficient learners produced a larger number of alternatives that had a lower degree of derivational complexity while advanced learners produced alternatives with higher degree of derivational complexity. These changes in the rate of alternative structures shown in the two proficiency groups conform to the prediction made by a theory of language acquisition known as the ‘derivational theory of complexity.’
