This study’s purpose is to analyze how the characteristics of female idol star’s fashion image depend on their specific type of fandom. The fandoms were classifies into three groups by reviewing relevant literature, according to their way of consuming the fashion images of female idol stars: teenager fandom, uncle fandom, and female in their twenties fandom. Based upon gathering and analysis of female Idol stars’ fashion images, the following characteristics of female idol star’s fashion image were derived: “sensuality using body exposure” and “sensuality stimulating sexual fantasy”; “innocent purity” and “ironic and unconventional purity”; “reflection of past or future” and “leading trends” The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the teenager fandom that forms is based on longing, and worship feelings tend to be attracted to the image of an idol’s sensual image, and fascinating image, which is associated with the teens’ sexual fantasies, or pure image that represents the ideal type of woman. Second, uncle fandom, which starts with redefining their fandom act as an effort to support and care for an idol star as a member of their family, does not react to visually sensual imagery that might make the fandom unethical. Rather, they accept the pure innocent image, retro image, or sensual image that has various meanings according to its interpretation. Third, the female in their twenties fandom started with feelings of envy and imitation, and prefers innovative and sensuous images that have possibility and meaning of imitation. They also take advantage of the idol’s fashion image as an indication of current fashion trends.
