This Study intends to figure out how overseas Korean consumers understood Korean Wave by analyzing the comments written on the Facebook page of KBS World. The analysis has been conducted on the comments generated from the year 2010 until May 2016. The tools used in the analysis were R and Python. We have collected data through the Facebook API and supplemented them using Google search.
In general, women have been regarded as the main consumers of Korean Wave content. The analysis of this paper also shows that the majority of Korean fandom is female, especially young ladies and girls under 25 years old. They are not only interested in dramas but also showing great interests in entertainment programs and Korean culture. The interests in the Korean Wave content leads them to actively consume Korean products.
By analyzing the comments on the Facebook page, we are able to understand what words have been used by Korean wave fans. At the same time, we analyzes the Korean wave fans’ reactions to Korean culture. In 2014, most Korean wave fans were more interested in drama and idol singers. However, since late 2014 interests in entertainment programs have grown significantly. In addition, interests in Korean language and Korea in general have also increased.
Now Korean Wave consumers are using various Korean expressions such as ‘oppa’ and ‘dae bak’ and this trend is expected to increase gradually in the future. This can be understood as a phenomenon in which the Korean Wave is breaking down the cultural barriers to Korea and expanding the base of Korean Wave consumption.

본 연구는 단일 한국 방송사로서는 가장 규모가 큰 KBS World의 페이스북 페이지에 작성된 댓글을 분석한 것이다. 이를 통해 해외 한류 소비자들이 한류를 어떻게 이해하는지 파악하였다. 분석은 페이지가 개설된 2010년부터 2016년 5월까지 생성된 댓글을 대상으로 수행하였다. 분석에 사용된 툴은 R과 Python이며 페이스북 API를 통해 데이터를 수집하였고, 구글 검색을 통해 보완하였다.
기존 연구에서는 대체로 여성이 한류 콘텐츠의 주요 소비자인 것으로 제시되어 왔다. 본 논문의 분석 결과 역시 한류 팬덤의 대다수가 여성, 특히 25세 이하의 젊은 여성이 많다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이들은 드라마 뿐 아니라 예능프로그램, 한국어 및 한국 문화에도 큰 관심을 보이고 있다.
이 연구에서는 이러한 한류 팬의 콘텐츠 소비 구조를 파악하기 위해 페이스북 페이지의 댓글을 분석하여 한류 팬들이 어떤 단어를 많이 사용하는지 파악하였다. 동시에 한국 문화에 대한 해외 한류 팬들의 반응을 분석하였다. 2014년까지 한류 팬은 대부분 드라마나 아이돌 가수에 더 큰 관심을 보였다. 하지만 2014년 후반부터 예능프로그램에 대한 관심이 높아지기 시작하였다. 그리고 한국어 및 한국에 대한 관심도 증가하는 경향을 보인다.
드라마, 음악 등을 통해 한류 소비자들은 한국어와 한국 문화에 관심을 더 가지고 적극적으로 표현하기 시작한 것으로 보인다. 한류 소비자들은 ‘oppa’나 ‘daebak’ 등 다양한 한국어 표현을 사용하고 있으며, 이러한 경향은 점차 증가하고 있다. 이는 한류가 한국에 대한 문화적 장벽을 허물고 한류 소비 저변을 넓혀나가고 있는 현상으로 이해할 수 있다.
