This paper is attempted to study on G. E. Moore's analysis of can-meaning and free will. He thinks the question of free will is related to that of meaning of the can-and could-statements.His analysis is as follows. The proper sense of the word 'could' means that we often could have done what we did not do; that is to say, that we often could have done anything else, except what we actually did. And to say that we sometimes could have done what we did not do, means in some sense that we have free will and also that we could have done if we had chosen. And 'we could have done it, if we had chosen' means 'we should have done it, if we had chosen'. In Moore's case, therefore, the voluntary action means an action which I should have done if I had chosen. In a word, the fact that we shcould often have done if we had chosen, entitles us to say that we have free will. Moreover to say that we should have done if we had chosen does not incompatible with the principle which everything has a cause. Therefore Moore thinks it is certain that free will does not incompatible with the causation. But there are really many open problems in Moore's on alysis of can-meaning and free will.
