The purpose of this study was to investigate the actor effect and partner effect through APIM analysis of the effects of couples self-differentiation and negative interaction on marital satisfaction so as to propose empirical data to prevent their relationships from worsening. The outcome of processing the survey results of 374 couples of survey results through APIM analysis were as follows: First, negative interaction had partly mediation effect on the couples’ marital satisfaction in relation to self-differentiation. The self-differentiation of the husband indirectly affects his and his wife’s marital satisfaction and directly affects through negative interaction. But the self-differentiation of the wife affects only indirectly her own marital satisfaction through negative interaction. Secondly, examination of actor effect and partner effect showed that each spouse’s actor-actor effect was only indirectly significant, and partner effect was that each spouse’s self-differentiation doesn’t have an effect on their marital satisfaction. In other words, each spouse’s self-differentiation of husband and wife was passed on through negative interaction to affect the marital satisfaction. These results carry important implications for marriage counseling.
