The self-similarity and recursiveness, characteristics of fractal, can be said to be the basic principle of life phenomena which can be defined as organizing the order or pattern internally by exchanging energy with external environment.
A bio-organism is a chaos itself where the self-similarity of the microstructure and the amorphous fractal of the macrostructure are mixed. The structural difference are discussed at micro and macroscopic level. Self-similarity of subcellular organisms such as virus, viroid and prion is also discussed. The hierarchical structures of biomacromolecules such as DNA, RNA and protein are also reviewed.
Extensive researches on the diagnosis and prevention of diseases by fractal dimension analysis are carried out. Some cases of fractal dimension analysis related to human disease such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s dementia, heart failure, and cancer, etc are discussed. Cases of fractal dimension analysis related to apoptosis are also discussed.
Whether information about morphogenesis of a bio-organism is included in the genome or not is in controversy up to now and the interpretation of the information about morphogenesis is very complex and seems to have limitations in analyzing complete patterns by existing molecular biological techniques.
Fractal dimension analysis is, based on recent researches, considered to be useful enough to complement molecular biological techniques as a quantitative analysis tool for various life phenomena including human disease diagnosis in post genome era.
