The purpose of this study is to analyze the phonotactic structures in English double codas and investigate the generalization of the phonemic arrangements of the double codas. To reach the purpose, the constraints which are related with both the sonority hierarchy and the difference of the sonority degree of each consonant in codas will be suggested. The optimal constraints for the phonotactic structures of the English double codas could depend upon Sonority Sequencing Principle(SSP), while the agreement constraint could provide language-specific coda clusters with proper analyses. This study will prove that the marked or unmarked sequences in English double codas can be explained by the sonority-related constraint C₁≥C₂[son] and the voicing agreement constraint AGREE[voice]. The constraints C₁≥C₂[son] and AGREE[voice] which are based on the language-universal principles can contribute to explaining the phenomenon that the language-specific arrangements of phonemes which violate the SSP are permitted in English double codas.
