This paper critically evaluates cognitivism, which is a position that a work of art can provide knowledge. As far as propositional knowledge is concerned, I think that cognitivism in its traditional framework is flawed. Noёl Carroll claims that a work of literature may well be a source of propositional knowledge. I argue against Carroll on the basis of the assessment that some objections against cognitivism have not been answered convincingly. After discussing the issues concerning non-propositional knowledge, I eventually pursue the possibility of obtaining propositional knowledge from a novel by changing some elements constituting the traditional framework. My suggestion is that what we should check is not the epistemic status of the belief that ‘p’, but the belief that ‘W asserts p.’ My point is that this is a better candidate for propositional knowledge if we have to think about propositional knowledge concerning art at all. This paper further explains why this is so.
