The purpose of this study is to analyze games in the three kinds of elementary school English textbooks for the third grade students. Specifically, analyses were made on following: First, the games in the textbooks were analyzed focusing on organizational patterns, language skills, instructional materials, motivational orientation for achievement and elements of competition. Second, the games were analyzed to explore possible weakness and then to make suggestions for improvement. Results of the analyses are as follows: First group work is better than whole-class or individual work. It gives learners more opportunities for learning and reduces the burden that individual work may impose on the learners. Second, Within the language skills, the highest percentage of speaking games suggests other games including listening, reading, and writing need to be expanded. Third, the ratio of games focusing on competition and those that rely on cooperation is appropriate for the level of learners. Finally, language skills and elements of luck are properly blended in the games. This study suggests two main followings: to conduct more effective English classes, students need to be divided into three distinct levels according to their English capabilities and encouraged to study in groups. This would effectively avoid the frustrations of lower-level learners who are unable to comprehend their tasks. Higher-level learners, on the other hand, would avoid a situation that is much too easy for them. As a consequence, these learners are unlikely to become bored or lose interest. And the classes are expected to cover more on to literacy which involves reading and writing. Games on English writing should be added such as those on writing English alphabet, words, and phrases. It would enrich English literacy education.
