The purpose of this study is to examine the difference in color formation depending on type of light source and hair color to be able to more accurately predict the resulting hair color for field application and contribute to customer satisfaction. The seven most widely used hair dyes were used on hair pieces and the L*a*b* was measured by colorimetric device to compare the chrominance and three attributes of colors. Then, using the visual observation NCS color atlas through expert group, evaluations were made which were then converted to L*a*b* for comparison. As the result, when compared with standard light source D65 through colorimetric device, among all light sources, the difference in value of L*a*b* was the largest in standard light source A and yellow and red lights were most common. In comparison, the difference in resulting value for L*a*b* was the smallest in standard light source F7.In addition, Visual observation showed brightness appears to be higher in every standard light source compared to the results of colorimetric device. Among all, “Ash brown” showed the biggest discrepancy compared to the results of colorimetric device in brightness, saturation and hue. This study is considered to provide the guidelines for light source during hair coloring and cautions for each hair dye color.
