I predicted that the Dabotap would ref lect the buddhist cosmology, which is composed of Mt. Meru and Tusità.
The word ‘Meru’ in a memoir about this stupa could be translated as the ‘Meru stylobate’, which is an architectural term widely used in Asia derived from Mt. Meru in Buddhist cosmology.
To find out the measurement standard of Dabotap, I divided the height of its stylobate by the height of Mt. Meru found in ancient texts and its result was around 22㎝. By applying the number to analyze the frameworks of the stupa that repeat the same measurement, 21.8703㎝ with 0.009 average error was found to be the measurement standard of Dabotap, which can be successfully used to rebuild the stupa’s construction plan. Around 21.8703㎝ is the length of a handspan, or the widths of 10 fingers. When applying the measurement standard of Dabotap to Seokgatap, with the measurement measured by the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, can be assumed to have been built using the same measurement standard.
Also, by converting the measurements from Ocksajo (屋舍 條: the enforced zoning ordinance of architecture of Unified Silla dynasty), which was promulgated by the king in the year 834, to the measurement standard of Dabotap, the dimension of the highest aristocrat’s room was 27.56 ㎡, while the lowest aristocrat’s and common people’s were 10.75 ㎡. With the same conversion, the wall of the second highest aristocrat’s must not be over 175㎝, and the second lowest artistocrat’s over 153㎝. These are acceptable measurements considering the presumptive average height during the period was 164.7 ㎝ for male, and 150.8 ㎝ for female. Therefore, it can be suggested that the measurement standard of Dabotap was still being used in the 9th century.
Until now, people believed that the unit of length in Unified Silla dynasty after the mid 7th century was either the unit of Dang dynasty (29.8㎝) or Goguryeo dynasty (35㎝). But from my analyzation of the structure of Dabotap, its measurement standard is 21.9㎝, a handspan, the same measurement standard derived from Han dynasty(around 23㎝). And by examining the result of this research, it is suggested that the family of the unit of Han dynasty was still in use not only in the 7th century, but also in the 8th and 9th century as well. Therefore, given the evidence, it can be assumed that the family of the unit of Han dynasty did not disappear, but was constantly in use throughout the Unified Silla dynasty period.
