Yangming Wang does not limit the moral scope to knowledge. That concept is one of the traditional ideas came down to us since Confucius. Wang defines morality is the rule of the cosmic community and to him the mind of the cosmos is humankind. As humankind is the mind of the cosmos, morality becomes the eternal rule of humankind. So, by living in morality humankind becomes united with the cosmos.
In contrast, Youlan Feng does limit the moral scope to knowledge. Morality to him is a product of a social community, not of the cosmic community, functioning as a frame and a pendulum of human society. Thereby, he argues it should be corrected according to the necessity and interests of human society. Yet, he does not think that morality will never be changed without cause; and also, he adds that it is possible to be united with the universe through the study based on the inherited rule as such morality inherently includes universal moral discipline.
Comparing these two concepts clearly shows that they pursue the identical intention which humankind becomes united with the universe. Wang discusses the concept of morality in terms of the relation between heavens and humankind which is a dichotomized relationship so it tends to be religious. However, since Feng deals with the concept of morality in terms of a triangular relationship among heavens, earth, and humankind, it has a strong tendency to be philosophical. These differences prove that they lived in a different times and social communities. Today, it is impossible to talk about the relation between heavens and humankind apart from society; and moreover, as one cannot accept any concept beyond knowledge legitimately, Poong must change the moral rules in the past drastically.
This study, however, clarifies that to these two scholars, morality is universal regardless of times and social communities and commonly share the idea that it, as the absolute rule, should be conducted in any case.
