The purpose of this paper was to inspect how 󰡔Sangbyeon Tonggo(常變通攷)󰡕 by Dongam(東巖) Ryu Jang-won(柳長源), a 18th-century scholar of Yeongnam region who academically specialized in rituals, affected the history of ritual studies during the late Joseon period. When first planned to be compiled, 󰡔Sangbyeon Tonggo(상변통고)󰡕 aimed to put itself out as an alternative literature to Zhu Xi’s huge collection of ritual theories, 󰡔Euirye Gyeongjeon Tonghae(儀禮經傳通解)󰡕 while being fundamentally based on the Chinese Confucian scholar’s 󰡔Garye(家禮)󰡕. After󰡔Sangbyeon Tonggo(상변통고)󰡕 was published, all of the then ritual scholars who were active in Yeongman region agreed that the book was really full-fledged and meticulously bibliographical. However, there was some limitation that 󰡔Sangbyeon Tonggo(상변통고)󰡕 had. It was that the literature is too much in content to be dealt with conveniently. To solve or reduce this problem, Soeun(素隱) Ryu Byeong-mun(柳炳文), Jeongjae(定齋) Ryu Chi-myeong(柳致明), and Geunam(近庵) Ryu Chi-deok(柳致德) respectively wrote and put out books about rituals. 󰡔Sangbyeon Tonggo(상변통고)󰡕 was a highly reputed bibliographic evidence for not only scholars of Yeongnam region, but also those of other regions, especially the Kiho School scholars. During the late Joseon period, there were many scholars across the country who often made references to 󰡔Sangbyeon Tonggo󰡕. Among them were Seongjae(性齋) Heo Jeon(許傳) and Unchang(芸窓) Park Seong-yang(朴性陽) in Seoul, Gwajae(果齋) Seong Geun-muk(成近默) in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi province, Sukjae(肅齋) Jo Byeong-deok(趙秉悳) in Boryeong, Chungcheong province, Ganjae(艮齋) Jeon Woo(田愚) in Jeonju, Jeolla province and Yipheon(立軒) Han Woon-seong(韓運聖) in Gyeongju. For those scholars, 󰡔Sangbyeon Tonggo(상변통고)󰡕 was a huge basis on which they discussed, pondered or judged ritual theories that they thought were doubtful. Meanwhile, they reviewed the book thoroughly, so they even could point out seemingly incomplete parts from the literature.
