Art worlds provide the contexts and communities in which artworks and other visual cultural artifacts educate. Recently artwork-based online digital communities, such as Polyvore, have emerged; but are they art worlds? I present evidence to show that digital visual cultural websites have the characteristics of traditional art worlds—they are formed symbolically in the same ways that other worlds are formed, and they contain the same collaborative networks of individuals, roles, institutions, processes, features, and functions found in traditional arts worlds. I illustrate how interactive digital art worlds communities function pedagogically and how they provide a means for students to learn to live their lives in art worlds—both digital and non-digital
