Rhee Syngman's Middle Thought and Korean Liberalism

This paper aims to examine the relationship between Rhee Syngman’s middle thought and conservative liberalism of Korea. This form of liberalism was imported in enlightenment period(1880’s) and has been understood as American liberal-democratism since then. I insist that Rhee’s middle period thought(1912-1945) was formed under the influence of this kind of liberalism and nationalism, and these two factors made Rhee and Korean(Joseon) liberalists unite after emancipation(1945). This paper consists of two parts. First part identifies the main characteristics of Rhee’s liberalism as anti-communism, capitalism and statism. This part emphasizes the transformation of western liberalism in Korea’s historical experiences. Second part shows his anti-communism was formed by nationalism and liberalism, especially highlighting the over-determination of nationalism. Lastly I contend that Rhee’s thought can be identified as conservative liberalism although it looks contrary to some aspects of western liberalism.
