This study aims to first examine the variation of Korean English Learners’ usage of boosters and to compare it in a given context with that of native speakers. Secondly, it looks into students’ English learning motivations and strategies that might affect their booster acquisition. 86 Korean high school students and 17 English native speakers participate in this research. The questionnaire consists of booster assessment section and the English learning strategy and motivation assessment section. The results reveals that three student groups showed significantly different abilities in using the boosters, and also that most Korean English learners are not familiar with the boosters that have undergone delexicalization process. Also, ‘cognitive strategy’ and ‘classroom ought-to self’ have a significant effect on their English booster competence. These results suggest frequent exposure to natural English booster collocations in corpora and a progressive learning strategies and motivation strategies help Korean English learners.
