It is reported that polyphenol supplementation reduces blood pressure in normotensive subjects at rest. It is not known that polyphenol supplementation during dynamic exercise in prehypertensive Men. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary nitrate derived from polyphenol on dynamic exercise in prehypertensives compared to the placebo supplementation. 11 prehypertensives (23.4±0.8 yrs) were recruited in this study. All subjects were assigned in a randomized, double-blind, crossover design to receive polyphenol extract (600 mg/day) and placebo (600 mg/day). The subjects were completed dynamic exercise at workload (50% of VO2peak). On day, the same protocol was repeated after polyphenol and placebo supplementation. All subjects were continuously instrumented to measure heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV), and obtain cardiac output (CO), mean arterial pressure (MAP), total peripheral resistance (TPR) at rest and during dynamic exercise. After polyphenol supplementation, MAP were significantly decreased at rest (99.9±1.2 vs. 97.4±1.0 mmHg) and during exercise (124.9±1.6 vs. 120.9±1.6 mmHg) compared to before supplementation. Also TPR was significantly decreased at rest. CO was significantly increased and TPR was significantly decreased during exercise compared to before supplementation. We demonstrated that polyphenol attenuated exercising BP via peripheral vasodilation in prehypertensives. Therefore, this study suggests that polyphenol supplementation are regarded as healthy and associated with low incidence of cardiovascular disease in prehypertensives.
