Plato was indeed the first critic of rhetoric, as a comtemporary of sophists, or representatives of rhetorical practice, education, and theory in the period of burgeoning ancient rhetoric. But he was also its beneficiary. While he has long stood out as a critic of rhetoric, he has attracted little attention on his rhetorical practice. Likewise, Platon’s Socrates plays the role of orators in some Dialogues, such as Menexenus, Symposium and Phaedrus.
Plato’s Apology of Socrates, composed of three speeches, seems to show us vividly the ancient Athenian civic law-court as the locus of the historical Socratic trial in 399 BCE. Differently from Plato’s usual Dialogues, Socrates speaks here almost alone, explaining his life and behaviour in apology of his own. In this context, my paper examines the Apology of Socrates as an example of Plato’s rhetorical practices. It will be clear, that Plato criticizes the contemporary rhetorical tools on surface, but he employs in depth the rhetorical instructions. It is not for the persuasion of rhetorical probabilities but for that of philosophical teachings. That’s why we are to evaluate Plato’s Apology of Socrates as “a rhetorical masterpiece” as well as a philosophical canon, for which I present in my paper various arguments in my rhetorical analyses on basis of Aristotle’s Rhetoric.
