Women are generally acknowledged to be good partners for peaceful and sustainable development; however, indigenous women are discriminated and unequally treated in Cambodia society. They play many roles in indigenous communities (elders, religious leaders, healers, and other necessary functions); however, they have not been replaced in formal authorities as commune councils or critical positions in indigenous communities yet. Imbalance of power, limited capacity and education in writing and speaking Khmer language, land conflicts and indigenous peoples rights abused are main obstacles for them to participate in Cambodia society and political/public sphere.
