In some societies in Africa, women have been reduced to act as sex objects and means of exchange. A woman’s sexuality is often owned by the patriarchal system that controls all affairs in our society. In Kenya, extreme cases of these culture is expressed in the way in which even when a young girl is raped, a payment of a goat is used to appease the family. This is because she is now considered ‘spoilt” goods and may not fetch much in the marriage market. Her ‘rape’ has devalued her. This commoditization of women has invariably led to an increased trade of women. This has also led to us having a class of women who have decided to take advantage of this culture and are currently using it for material gains. We are currently experiencing a subculture of socialites and sex tourists in Kenya’s coastal cities where the combination of poverty and wrong orientation have driven some orphans in particular, as young as eleven years old, to prostitute for just $0.5USD in search of food or their much needed sanitary towels. Some parents even use their girls as fountains of wealth instead of enrolling them in schools. Girls are taught foreign languages so as to appeal to tourists.

Although Kenya attracts many tourists worldwide, there is an underground but well known cadre of sex tourists who come to sample the sexual cuisine that is easily accessible as a result of the poverty and the destroyed moral fabric of the community. Given the fact that it is proscribed behaviour, when the children are harmed by these sexual predators, parents and guardians choose to settle matters quietly in any case of rape or sexual exploitation. Consequently, there are many girls with no formal education and an increased vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. From these short term affairs, girls do have children from different men across regions and countries, and later left broken and in despair.

Within this morass of pain, a nongovernmental organization-Toto Afrika-is advocating and empowering the vulnerable girls and their parents through vocational training, life skills, sexual rights and mentorship on the dangers of early marriages, commercial sex and lack of formal education. The NGO, in collaboration with a Kenya Senator, has ordered for a sanitary making machine from India so as to manufacture sanitary towels by employing some of the girls who in the process will be economically empowered. Nevertheless, resources for rehabilitation and preventive measures still remain our main challenges. Despite these challenges, the organization trudges along, knowing full well that these young people need a voice and resources which will add options in the lives of these vulnerable children.
