In Old English (OE), the voiceless palatal stops, [c] and [sc], become a coronal palato-alveolar affricate [ʧ] and fricative [ʃ], respectively. This change is often collectively called assibilation in OE literature. The goals of this study are to explore OE assibilation of the voiceless palatal stop and to attempt to analyze it within the framework of Optimality Theory (OT) (McCarthy and Prince 1995, Prince and Smolensky 1993). In this study I claim OE assibilation is a result of acoustic property of the palatal stops rather than a result of articulatory assimilation. To implement this claim, I propose a constraint Add [+strid] based on Clements’(1999) and Kim’s (2001) findings. This study shows the proposed constraints and their interaction correctly explain the distribution of [ʧ]~[k] and that of [ʃ]. In addition, the proposed analysis couched in OT with candidate chains (OT-CC) (McCarthy 2007a, b) allows us to incorporate the apparent exceptions under the same hierarchy of the constraints.
