This article discusses Syrian Orthodox Christians (Suriyan qadim/othodoks in Arabic) in Syria, who seek to reshape their musical tradition as a means of establishing a group identity within the framework of the Syrian nation. When religious multiculturalism is part and parcel of Syrian society, communal histories offer a further and richer dimension to national historiography by incorporating themselves into the national narrative. Syrian Orthodox Christians believe that their own church music is a religious and cultural heritage that demonstrates the origin of their community and its endurance in Syria since ancient times. The laity participate in singing hymns during church services. The hymn singing is supposed to act as a commemorating process of their own Syrian history and its heritage. These Christians emphasize their ‘Syrianness’, whilst stressing their cultural distinctiveness as descendants of the inhabitants of pre-Islamic Syria. This article focusses on how ordinary Syrian Orthodox Christians enact and promote such political ideologies through musical performance and religion.
