This paper aims to explore the syntactic phenomena related to CP complements. Traditionally, CP complements are assumed to have a focus property, so they have to move to the rightmost position in the clause. However, the rightward movement approach to CP complements has many empirical problems with P-standing effects. To resolve the problems, Kayne (1994, 2005) and Moulton (2015) propose the leftward movement approach to CP complements, but they do not account for the phenomena properly, as pointed out in Bruening (2015). In this paper, we propose a unified approach in terms of focus and topic. CP complements inherently receive focus interpretation, so they remain in-situ in VP. In contrast, CP complements’ clause-mate PPs should be topicalized, so they move to the Spec of TopP. As a result, the extraction from PP is blocked.
