The rapid globalization is accelerating movement across national and intercultural boundaries. Accordingly, conflicts caused by mixing of different cultures within a country become a universal phenomenon and an important concern. Cultural conflicts arise when different cultures meet due to a new influx of culture. According to Homi Bhabha, a prominent theorist of postcolonialism, this cultural conflict can be interpreted as the concept of ‘ambivalence’, ‘hybridity’, ‘mimicry‘, and ‘Culture’s In-Between’. Homi Bhabha regards the dynamic space in which the ambivalence, hybridity, and mimicry are reproduced as a ‘ Culture’s In-Between’. and places the current culture in this space.
This paper analyzed how the concept of culture presented by Homi Bhabha is expressed in the movie 〈Kamome Diner〉. The movie 〈Kamome Diner〉, which starts with an establishment of a Japanese restaurant in Finland, reveals conflicts caused by cultural differences between Finns and Japanese people. However, it focuses on the universality of conflict rather than emphasizing conflict. Also, the appearance of ambivalence, hybridity, and mimicry are expressed quite interactively. Therefore, the movie 〈Kamome Diner〉 effectively shows culture as a ‘In-Between’ that changes dynamically while interactively effecting each other.
