Objective: The aim of this study is to compare the driver’s emotional responses of different haptic signals configurations delivered through a haptic actuator. It is to check whether haptic signals can convey transparent messages or information to drivers. Background: In recent days, cars have become intelligent systems that interact with the driver, historically the display of information has been done through the visual and auditory modality. However, multimodal displays have been introduced by car manufacturers in order to declutter the visual sense. In order to take advantage of the haptic modality, and reduce the driver’s cognitive overload; it needs to be confirmed that this channel can be used to deliver higher quality information instead of just being used as a redundant part of the multimodal display. Method: Experiments were performed to gather the emotional responses for the different configurations of haptic signals delivered through a computerized interactive driving simulator. The haptic signals were configured by using different sets of frequency and acceleration values. 20 pair of adjectives were defined to measure the emotional value of each haptic signal configuration and the semantical differential method was used to measure them using a 5 point scale. Results: The emotional responses were classified in two groups: urgency and awareness. An emotional map was constructed with the different signal configurations and the average emotional responses. Conclusion: The study shows that the perceived urgency of the haptic signals can be influenced by a proper coding. High urgency was obtained with higher values of frequency and acceleration; low urgency was obtained when low values of frequency and acceleration were used. But for the awareness factor, the responses were spread out meaning that different pairs of adjectives should be used to get a better understanding of how to influence this factor. Application: In this study it has been proven that information can be delivered independently through a haptic display and therefore can be used as a standalone modality in future in-vehicle information systems.
