15 profound hearing-impaired teenagers and adults were evaluated the auditory responses to speech using both real and recorded speech sound. Even though they showed 100% correct responses on closed-set words and sentences of EARS-K Battery, and 80~100% correct responses on open set words and sentences of EARS-K, they just got scored 40~70% with new evaluation Battery that was newly developed in this study. The new Battery contains nonsense words that acoustic characteristics of Korean phonemes are reflected, words that Korean phonological rules were applied, sentences having same-place phonemes are contained, and unfamiliar simple and complex sentences and paragraphs with various lengths. The reason why we include these words, sentences and paragraphs in the new Battery is that most hearing-impaired people are extremely hard to listen to those materials. For the better understanding and communication skills in real life, they have to be exposed to those materials with utmost care.
In the results of this study, the subjects showed 75% correct responses on nonsense syllables and words, and more than 95% correct responses on pattern perception with real speech. But less than 65% correct responses on nonsense syllables and words with recorded speech, and approximately 50% correct response on final and minimal 1 syllable words showing minimal pair opposition were observed. When subjects heard ordinary complex sentences, telephone ARS sentences, and paragraphs with various lengths via recorded speech, they obtained just 43~52% correct responses. It looks like difficult task for the hearing-impaired to listen sentences comprised of same- place phonemes. In these tasks, subjects obtained just 54% correct responses with real speech, and 37% correct responses via recorded speech. And subjects seemed to feel difficulty when listened to /ㄱ, ㄲ, ㅋ/ sentence and /ㅅ, ㅆ/ sentence.
This study proposes and introduces newly developed auditory evaluation program which evaluates the listening ability of the hearing-impaired properly in real life situation. According to the results of current study, auditory evaluation program has to contain the tasks of listening acoustic characteristics of Korean phonemes, Korean phonological rules, phonemes of same place of articulation, and unfamiliar simple and complex sentences and paragraphs with various lengths.
