This paper examines host-guest interactions in Korean talk shows with special reference to how the host’s receipt work addressing the guest’s response is organized. Using conversation analysis (CA) and membership categorization analysis (MCA), it analyzes the sequential development in which the host formulates or re-presents the guest’s answer by proposing a version of reality alternative to the one proposed by the guest. This formulation process is shown to be organized by category-transformative work obliquely performed by the host as a way of grounding the subsequent interactions on the host’s own terms and agendas. The normative character of the host’s formulation practice is noted, which furnishes the host with the basis for engaging in an array of morally-implicative face/identity work vis-à-vis the guest. With the import of soliciting or mobilizing the TV-viewing audiences’s co-alignment, various features of the host’s categorization work displayed in this process embody the host’s orientation to his/her role as the gatekeeper of information and cultural mediator who closely and omnirelevantly attends to regulating norms and establishing the terms of interaction as verbally hygienic, normatively solid, and morally safe.
