The purpose of this study is to explore developmental characteristics of microstructure elements in descriptive discourse data written by lower grade children (1st to 3rd) of elementary school. For this study, among 72 normally developing children who had a writing test, the data of 61 children, in which at least more than two sentences were written, were manually analyzed. Microstructure elements of descriptive discourse were classified into five categories (discourse length, lexical diversity, lexical cohesive markers, grammatical cohesive markers, and syntactic complexity). As a result, discourse length (T-unit) and syntactic complexity significantly increased according to the grade, but TTR was proportionally decreased. The elements of lexical cohesive markers and grammatical cohesive markers showed diverse aspects. In the comparison between boys and girls, the latter significantly used more synonyms, general words, emotive words, and special semantic function particles. In addition, we found that predicate clauses were relatively characteristic in descriptive discourse writing of school-aged children. These results provide basic information about microstructure of descriptive discourse. However, to extract developmental indexes of descriptive discourse from these results, it needs additional studies with participants of higher grades by comparing descriptive discourse with other discourse types in future works.
