This study aims at surveying the tendency of the stabilization of modern neologism in SINDONGA (a magazine published by SINDONGA Co. from 1931 to 1936), in particular, in the column ‘Modern Language Review (모던어 점고)’ and ‘Newspaper’s Modern Language Dictionary (신문신어사전)’.
SINDONGA’s neologism includes 640 items, but 51 items are overlapped. In this study, these items are divided into genealogical elements and parts of speech. For the most part, neologism items mainly stem from the Western languages and Chinese characters. The parts of speech were nouns overwhelmingly.
These modern neologism items are compared with the entry words in PHYOJUN GUKEODAESAJEON (the Standard Korean Dictionary compiled in the National Institute of Korean Language).
In conclusion, these neologism items registered in the dictionary have been settled in standard Korean words. However, the unregistered items are classified into two groups: One is ‘fashionable expressions’, and the other is excluded from the principal of word selection in PHYOJUN GUKEODAESAJEON.
