The purposes of present study were to determine the acquisition of throwing pattern by an observational evaluation method, and to determine the reliability and objectivity of the observational evaluation of throwing pattern in young children. The subjects were 248 children(124 boys and 124 girls) from 3 to 5 years of age. The performance test item was tennis ball throwing for distance. Their throwing pattern was recorded by a video camera and was evaluated by the observational evaluation method using 20 motion categories in each motion phases. Then, the reliability of the observational evaluation method was determined by comparison between first and second tials of throwing in each subjects. And the objectivity of this method was determined by comparison between both scores of the evaluation obtained by the 4 professors and 4 nursery teachers. The major findings are summarized as follows; 1. The first and second trials of throwing in each subject were compared. The degree of agreement between the first and second evaluations was significantly high. The results suggested that observational evaluation method was applicable for the evaluation of throwing and there was high reliablity in this method. 2. The throwing patterns of 52 selected children were evaluated by 4 professors and 4 nursery teachers using the observational evaluation method. The degree of agreement and the correlation coefficients between 4 professors and 4 nursery teaches were significantly high. These results indicated that objectivity of the observational evaluation method was high and applicable for the evaluation of the development in throwing of young children. 3. The throwing pattern was superior in the boys to that of the girls, and there was a significant sex difference at the age of 4 and 5 years in this acquisition process.
