This paper aims to examine the a costumes of the operators of the Tongsinsa fleet in 1811 year Sinmi-Tongsinsa. The result can be summarized as follows. The Tongsinsa(delegation to Japan) fleet in the late Joseon Dynasty was composed of 3 Giseon, which were passenger ships, and 3 Bokseon, which were cargo ships. As the envoys for the 1811 delegation were not accompanied by any retinues, the fleet was composed of 2 Giseon and 2 Bokseon. The operators for the Tongsinsa fleet included Giseon captains, Bokseon captains, ferrymen(called ‘sagong’), and laborers(called ‘gyeok-gun’). Each ship had one captain and four ferrymen. In addition, 60 gyeok-guns would generally be assigned to each Giseon, while 30 gyeok-guns were assigned to each Bokseon; however, the number of gyeok-guns per Giseon was decreased to 50 for the 1811 delegation. As a rule, Giseon captains were chagwan grade, Bokseon captains and ferrymen were junggwan grade, and gyeok-guns were hagwan grade, but for the 1811 delegation, Bokseon captains were treated as chagwan grade. For the 1811 delegation, Giseon captains and Bokseon captains would wear jeollip with decorations of silver jeungja, sangmo, gongjakwoo, or ipyeong, blue or green hyeopsu with hongsu, and thereupon lapis lazul kwaeja with a red lining, and then a red military belt. Ferrymen would wear jeollip with decorations of jeungja, sangmo, or ipyeong, and decolored hyeopsu, and thereupon lapis lazul kwaeja with a lapsi lazul lining, and then a red military belt. Gyeok-guns would wear jeollip without ipsik, decolored jeogori and pants, and thereupon lapis lazul kwaeja with a lapsi lazul lining, and then a blue military belt.
