Recently, as Nagoya Protocol took effect, there has been a surge of interest in the conservation and utilization of biological resources of one’s own country. In South Korea, as the people were growing more and more interested in biological diversity of De-Militarized Zone (DMZ)　region, there has been a discussion about the establishment of an institute of biological resources for the conservation and utilization of biological resources in this area. This study was conducted to examine the preliminary feasibility of the construction of the institute of biological resources for the biological resources in the DMZ region in Gyeonggi-do.
This study examined the inhabiting status of plants and animals in the DMZ region. It analyzed the scope of research and the main function of research institutes of biological resources constructed previously. It also looked into the status of the biological industries in Gyeonggi-do. It set up functions that a new institution should have for the vitalization of the domestic biological industries.
As a result of this study, it was found that many existing research institutes of biological resources have conducted studies of biological resources in the DMZ region since they are of great value. Thus, it was judged that carrying forward a new institution with the same scope of research as that of the existing institutions would have low validity. However, it turned out that the existing research institutes of biological resources have a very insufficient function of supporting the biological industries’ proper uses of biological resources. Therefore, the validity of the promotion of a new institution with the function of supporting the uses of biological resources would be high. Based on the results of this study, roles and function of the carrying forward a new institution were set up, and two kinds of detailed method of the promotion were proposed.
