In this study, a tap water trust survey was conducted throughout Gyeonggi province in order to identify present conditions of tap water drinking in Gyeonggi-do, to identify the cause for distrust, and to provide a solution to this problem.
Technical fixes should be made in water supply and sewage systems and in raw water quality control to secure tap water quality safety. Public relations activity should be held in parallel, to deliver accurate information on tap water safety and drinking value, and to correct distorted media reports.
Therefore, to procure tap water safety the following should be implemented; adopting advanced water treatment facilities that takes into regard the characteristics of pollution source and pollutants, repairing worn-out pipes in old cities, enhancing water flow rate in northeastern Gyeonggi, adjusting administrative procedures to better support indoor water pipeline improvements, transferring direct-coupled water supply systems to small buildings. Gyeonggi province should first discuss with cities and counties about its project promotion, secure a waterwork maintenance plan and budget, then make sure facility investments are made.
In accordance to facility improvements, promotion measures are also necessary. Gyeonggi province can regularly notify tap water quality in outdoor electronic displays, use press release, public campaign, radio, social network for promotional activities, operate a volunteer group called the tap water evaluation group(tentative), and install public water fountains. Furthermore, Gyeonggi Tap Water Public Relations Association should be organized and operated to improve awareness through cooperation between Gyeonggi-do and waterwork businesses.
