As Korea has been transforming into a multicultural society, religion has supported a variety of services for immigrants. One typical religious response to immigration is the building of a “multicultural church.” Though the number of such churches including both Koreans and immigrants is increasing, there is little existing research regarding multicultural church dynamics. In order to explain the internal dynamic of such churches, it is necessary to approach the multicultural church from the standpoint of “social capital,” 1) social networks of reciprocity, trust, and solidarity; 2) accessibility toward or denial of resources within networks; 3) bonding or bridging capital in relation to social integration. The results indicate that at the individual level, both Koreans and immigrants emphasize belonging and solidarity through networks. Immigrants can access certain resources, but some members are denied due to problems of legitimacy. At the organizational level, connection to the mainstream church or building a mission post in the immigrants’ homeland can be a form of “bridging social capital.” However, discrepancies in belief, leadership change in the church structure, and the exclusive character of decision-making procedures can negatively influence the dynamics of social capital within a multicultural church.
