This study analyses the direct and indirect effects produced by Eurasian countries’ cultural idiosyncrasies on the international trade flows in the region. The indirect effects work through cultural distance and the extent of economic freedom. While all six cultural dimensions considered in this analysis are found to be producing strong and robust effects on the international trade flows, only power distance, uncertainty avoidance and long-term orientation are found to have strong directs effects. Power distance index is the only cultural dimension that influences bilateral trade flows in the opposite directions depending on whether the direct or indirect effect is considered. This finding suggests a tradeoff between the role of hierarchy as a constraint on economic freedom, and its role as a tool to promote economic interests of the enterprises in the international trade sector.
