This paper aimed at investigating the interrelationship between Korean literature and the snow[雪], and the esthetic property of Korean literature as the literature of snow. The image of snow in the classical literature is largely divided into two. One is the image of the purity and the heaven, another is hardship and ordeal. The snow as the existence of purity and the heaven is the metaphor which came from the property of the snow. On the contrary, the snow as the image of hardship and ordeal appears when it is combined with the winter with metonymic relation.
Image of snow in modern literature basically succeeds the image of purity and hardship, however there’s a strong tendency to escape from the stereotypical image compared to the classical literature, and is renewed newly with modern sensitivity. Modern literature shows individual and independent image in regard of snow. The snow symbolizes longing or appears as philosophical medium, etc. which reveals maternal existence, and boundary between the life and the death. This could be confirmed in the poem of Kim, gwangseob, Kim gwanggyun, Seo, jeongju, Go eun, etc. On the other hand, Kim, chunsu and Kim, suyeong’s poem confirmed the experimental attempt to invent a new image of snow and discussed the meaning thereof.
In modern novel, the image of snow generally means hardship and ordeal, This is caused by the point that snow and the seasonal background cannot be divided considering the characteristic of narration genre. The researcher investigated the image of snow which symbolized hardship and ordeal in Hwang, seokyeong and Bang, yeongwoong’s novel. And the researcher analyzed that concrete and independent image and symbolization of snow appeared in Seo, jeong-in and Park, sangwoo’s short stories. Lastly, the researcher discussed that the image of snow was an excellent case to achieve the symbolization of love by analyzing Lee, cheongjun’s 「The Snowy Road」, and evaluated it as the work which proved the interrelationship between Korean literature and the snow.
