This paper aims at examining the Church’s teaching on consecrated life after the Second Vatican Council. Vatican Ⅱ affirms the universal call of all Christians to holiness and emphasizes that religious life does not consist in a third state between clergy and the laity. It thus sets a new direction for theological and pastoral reflection on the raison d’être of consecrated life in the post-conciliar era. Pope John Paul Ⅱ re-stated the objective superiority of consecrated life as a way to holiness. However, Pope Francis, in line with Lumen Gentium, does not conceive of consecrated life as superior to clergy or lay. Rather, by evoking the prophetic role of religious life in making heterotopia, he stresses the mission of consecrated life in the contemporary world rather than its status in the Church. He thus expects that the various religious communities concretize the ideal of the Church in the world par excellence.
