This study attempts to explore the existence patterns of classical novel in the times of coexistence classical novel and modern novel. For this, the objects of research are the <Cho‒Saeng‒Won‒Jeon>, <Gu‒Ui‒San>, and <Kim‒Ssi‒Yeol‒Haeng‒Rog>. These are different to the structure of narration, a title and a print media in spite of the same motive. In other words, although the three novels have a common motive of ‘the stepmother who killed the child by the husband’s former wife in bridal room,’ but these different to the print media each other.
<Cho‒Saeng‒Won‒Jeon> is a manuscript of unknown authorship and era. But <Gu‒Ui‒San> is a serial story that was published in a series in Mai‒il Shinbo on 1911 and <Kim‒Ssi‒Yeol‒Haeng‒Rog> is a printed book that was published by Deachangsewon in 1919.
<Cho‒Saeng‒Won‒Jeon>, which is a manuscript with the strong tendency of Gasa‒Style, has indicated the one side of enjoyment in late Joseon Era. The manuscript classical novels for communal reading are the characteristic of the ideality, fantasy, surrealism about the setting‒up a situation and a solution plan.
<Gu‒Ui‒San> appeared the stereoscopic figure of characters and have got a description form to put emphasis on newness of the course of events. These features have to do with newspaper’s role do the realization of human form as modern individual. Thus this study evaluate that <Gu‒Ui‒San> reflected the newspaper novel discourse of the enlightenment including a modernity and a civilization. <Kim‒Ssi‒Yeol‒Haeng‒Rog> has feature that is enhanced the role of female with the expansion of description structure. <Kim‒Ssi‒Yeol‒Haeng‒Rog>, what has got a overlapped description structure and a cruel situation description, have relevance to the commercial viability of a printed classical novels. Furthermore, <Kim‒Ssi‒Yeol‒Haeng‒Rog> is influenced by the sexuality and the popular nature of soap opera.
The <Gu‒Ui‒San> as a serial story and the <Kim‒Ssi‒Yeol‒Haeng‒Rog> as a printed book reflects a historic and architectural discourse as like modern individualization, generalization and scientification. But <Cho‒Saeng‒Won‒ Jeon> has not reflected it. Therefore, this study emphasize that classical novel is not disappeared but changed into the structure of narration, a title and a print media depending on the needs of the times and the changed character of media.

이 연구는 고소설과 신소설이 공존하던 시대에 고소설이 어떠한 존재양상을 보이는가에 주목하였다. 조선 후기부터 1920년대를 거치면서 고소설이 어떠한 양상으로 그 모습을 바꾸어 존재하고 있는지, 즉 고소설의 변화상을 고찰할 필요가 있다고 보았다. 이를 근거로 이 연구는 동일한 모티프를 가지고 있으면서도 서사 구조와 제명, 매체를 각각 달리하는 <조생원전>, <구의산>, <김씨열행록>을 연구 대상으로 한다.
<조생원전>, <구의산>, <김씨열행록> 세 작품은 신방의 아들을 죽인 계모 모티프를 공통적으로 가지고 있지만 각각 존재하는 매체가 다르다. <조생원전>은 작자·연대 미상의 필사본이며 <구의산>은 1911년에《매일신보》에 연재된 신문소설이고 <김씨열행록>은 <대서두서>와 합본되어 1928년 태화서관에서 간행한 활자본이다. 즉, 같은 모티프가 각각의 매체에 따라 제명과 내용이 다른 작품으로 존재하는 것이다.
<조생원전>이 가사체의 성향이 강하게 드러나는 필사본인 것은 조선후기 소설 향유의 일면을 대표적으로 보여준다. 공동체적 독서를 위한 필사본 고소설은 정황 설정과 해결 방안 등에 관념성·환상성·초현실성을 특징으로 하는 담론으로 개입할 가능성이 크다.
<구의산>이 <조생원전>과 다른 가장 특징적인 부분은 서두이다. <조생원전>은 시간적 흐름에 따라 보여주고 있다. 이에 비해 <구의산>은 이동집이 오복을 귀애하는 장면으로 시작되고 서판서가 이동집을 후처로 맞게 되는 과정은 시간을 역행하여 회상으로 처리함으로써 사건 진행의 현재성을 중시하는 서술 형태를 가지고 있다. 또한 사건이 전개되는 과정에서 이동집과 칠성의 성격이 급변하고 있어 인물 설정에 입체적인 모습을 보여주기도 한다.
사실성의 확보를 위해 <구의산>은 <조생원전>이 남편의 죽음을 현몽을 통해 확인하거나 살인자를 직접 처단하는 것과는 다른 양상으로 나타난다. 가장 대표적인 것이 이동집의 처분에 재판이라는 제도를 활용하고 있다는 점이다. 이는 근대적 사실주의의 한 단면으로도 이해할 수 있다. 이는 <구의산>에 근대성과 개화라는 신문소설적 담론이 반영된 것이라고 할 수 있다.
<조생원전>과 <구의산>이 ‘신방의 아들을 계모가 살해하다’와 ‘가장이 길을 떠나고 가족이 찾아와 상봉한다’는 내용이 중심이 된 데 비해 <김씨열행록>은 여기에 가장이 돌아온 후 며느리가 계모에 의해 다시 고난을 겪는 부분이 부가되어 있다. <김씨열행록>의 서사 구조가 확대되면서 등장인물 중 여성의 역할이 증대된다는 특징을 가진다. <김씨열행록>에서의 서사 구조의 확대는 여성들을 중심으로 한 갈등과 그 해결과정이 부가되어 있다는 점에서 여성의 역할과 행위에 초점을 맞춘 작품이라고 할 수 있다.
<김씨열행록>의 서사 구조가 <조생원전>이나 <구의산>에 비해 장황해진 것은 문학성을 폄하하는 이유가 되기도 한다. 하지만 이는 구활자본 고소설이 상업성과 불가분의 관계에 있었고 단순한 오락성을 내포한 흥미 위주의 형태로 출발할 수밖에 없었던 사실과 관련이 있다. 또한 활자본 고소설과 경쟁하던 신소설과 사실주의적 근대소설은 <김씨열행록>이 가진 사실적이고 잔인한 상황 묘사와 이의 중첩을 가능하게 하는 원인이라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 당시 유행하던 신파극의 선정성과 통속성은 당시 유행하는 문화 담론으로 기능하면서 <김씨열행록> 형성에 영향을 미친 것이라고 본다.
신문소설과 활자본 소설로서의 <구의산>, <김씨열행록>은 매체가 등장한 시대적 담론, 즉 근대의 개인화와 일상화 및 과학화를 반영하면서 <조생원전>이 보여준 스토리텔링 방식과는 다르게 나타났다고 볼 수 있다. 이로써 시대의 변화에 따라 매체가 변화하고 고소설이 사라진 것이 아니라 매체의 특성과 함께 시대가 요구하는 모습으로 변이한 것임을 알 수 있다.
