This study provides a comparison of Korean and Japanese migrants in Brazil, analyzing the processes of their adaptation and integration in the Latin American country. Using the data from the 2010 Brazilian Census provided by the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series, IPUMS-I at the Minnesota Population Center, this study compared various socio-economic characteristics of two Asian ethnic minorities in Brazil, including migration histories, areas of residence, religion, educational achievement, occupational diversity, citizenship acquisition and income level. The result shows that both Korean and Japanese ethnic groups emigrated to South America from East Asia, but it turned out that their processes of adaptation and integration into the host society were quite different. Most importantly, their migration trends were tightly connected with the receiving country’s needs for human resources. In their adaptation and integration in the destination country, both ethnic minorities also show differences. Japanese migrants are more dispersed all over Brazil and engage in various jobs, including agricultural occupations, but their Korean counterparts, although relatively high in their socio-economic status, tend to be disproportionately more focused on service and sales jobs in urban areas.
