German churches played a very important role in German reunification. West German churches bridged between West and East German government. East German Churches did not remain silent. performing a decisive role as well. They had tried hard for freedom and democratization in East German. One of the remarkable activities was ‘Friedensgebet,’ a prayer meeting for peace at St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig, which had been actually led by pastor Christoph Wonneberger. There had been fewer than one hundred at the meeting by the summer of 1989. It was Wonneberger’s sermon claiming ‘nonviolence’ at church on Sept. 25, 1989 that detonated an organized Montagsdemonstration (Monday Demonstrations). Since then, demonstrators had been increased in its number by geometric. While Monday prayer meetings on going, he had discoursed the Sermon on the Mount, which gave East Germans under suffering solace and courage. His discourse had even reduced the secret police not to follow the order from the authority. Once this happened, the government fell into a big disorder. By changing the supreme leader, the government had tried to solve the problem but the demonstration had gradually evolved into a nationwide movement and rocked East Germany. Finally, the way of German reunification opened with the collapse of the Berlin Wall on the night of Nov. 9. It can be said that the Monday prayer meetings led by Wonneberger has proved an incentive to German reunification.
Wonneberger had led the Monday prayer meetings on the base of freedom and nonviolence. He had learned the spirit of resistance for freedom out of Dietrich Bonhoeffer but unlike him, he had taken the nonviolence pacifism of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Futhermore Ernst Bloch’s ‘Das Prinzip Hoffnung’ had motivated him to have the hope for the better world and not to give up the nonviolent peaceful resistance in the desperate situations.
What Wonneberger had done gives Korean churches several assignments: First, they should pray not only for Korea reunification but for the realization of human universal value (i.e. civil rights, peace, preservation of creation order, etc.) for the better life. Second, church leaders, with faith, have to boldly walk the life of Christoph Wonneberger, perceiving ‘the significance of one man’s prayer and action.’ Third, they must take steps to fulfill what they pray. Prayer and action should not be split. They should go together.
