This study examines the difference of the gradience effect in phonetic realizations of the English vowel between the phrasal verbs and prepositional verbs. Based on sentence stresses observed in three acoustic parameters such as vowel durations, intensity, and F0, this study aims to characterize the way in which these acoustic parameters interact with each other in two speaker groups, one the native speakers of English and the other those of Korean. The results of the acoustic analysis indicate that the vowel duration and intensity difference between phrasal verb and prepositional verb are statistically significant in American speaker groups. From the intensity and duration between the following vowel of verb and the following vowel adverb, it turned out that the duration of the vowel in the adverb produced by American is longer than verb when the primary stress is on the adverb. From the intensity and vowel duration between verb and preposition, the vowel values of intensity of verb and preposition produced by Korean speakers are very similar, and show lower values than American speakers. In the stressed verb, the intensity and vowel duration vary as a function of the position in the sentence. This comes to the point that the main effect on the intensity, vowel duration and F0 value differs depending on the American speakers, namely that it is the prosodic prominence in the case of the American speakers, whereas it is the prominence in the case of the Korean speakers of English that plays a crucial role in defining the F0 value.
