Rudyard Kipling is one of the most controversial writers in English literature. There exist two opposing opinions on Kim. One is that Kim is a nonpolitical novel, and the other is that the novel is political. Namely, some critics evaluate that the work mirrors more faithfully Indian culture and Indian life in an aesthetic point of view. And it is argued that the novel advocates and propagates British Imperialism. The purpose of this study is to examine British imperialism in Kim from political viewpoint. Political and historical contexts are hidden cleverly in Kim. This study reveals those contexts through contra-punctual reading and proves that Kipling wrote Kim as a strategic implement. To develop the argument, the study examines why the writer sets up main character, Kim as not an English but an Irish, Second, it examines the nature of one of British imperialistic policy, the Great game and Kim's role in the game. Last, it reveals that the writer sets up the colonized like a lama and a retired soldier as a representative of soft and spiritless natives without independent disobedience against British imperialism.
