Temperance was one of the most important social reformation movements of Victorian Britain. The moderation temperance was initiated by the middle class in order to help working class people reduce their consumption of alcohol, but it soon gave way to the teetotal temperance movement. Teetotalism eventually became the main stream self-help temperance movement for the working class people who were more isolated and threatened by the rapid progress of industrialization. Janet Hamilton, the best known working class poet in Victorian Scotland, was a relentless advocate of teetotalism. Her temperance poems are probably the best example of temperance literature that illustrates the consequences of intemperance among the working class people and the temperance movement in general. In her poems, she asserts that temperance is something that should be adopted most urgently for the betterment of working class people. Hamilton sincerely believed that it was her duty as a working class poet to help and improve the condition of the working class people through her writing, and her temperance poems are the best expression of such sense of responsibility.
