Environment color produces images of city and completes them finally. Recently studying on city color moves lively in Korea. However most of them is study on a built-up area of city. Guideline research is also produced affluently, but it is not suited in farm village. Most area of the farm village usually consists of mountain or sea. Otherwise the majority is historic sites. The farm village is different from urban land which is usually containing artificial buildings. But most color design has no regard for it, so our farm village is losing own feature. This is the first study on color development research regarding a small farm area as "Gun" unit in Korea. Hwasun-gun consists of 70% mountain in total area, and is a city having many cultural relics made of rock. As a result of color present status research, the color of natural landscape still prevails against ornately artificial building color, so it doesn"t make a issue anymore. Hwasun country office develops symbol color and landscape color in order to continue a current Hwasun"s natural image. The preceding activity to extract typical landscape color is selecting an element of landscape resources. The Hwasun country office had some process to select 20 views among a lot of landscape elements. The selecting work was based on several processes such as literature research, press exposure rate research, local expert consultation and local resident vote. And then the country office induce residents to draw some image about the selected 20 views. As a result most residents showed a tendency drawing the object itself. And they couldn"t draw the image about sunset but drew the beautiful time of sunset. We can know that the residents usually feel a difficulty if they are asked to draw the whole view, and they are trying to express themselves as writing some feeling or expression of color about the whole scene. We decided a colorimetric part of landscape object based on the image map drawn by resident, and produced landscape colors. Through excepting similar colors among total 34 colors, the 24 landscape colors are gained. And we finally selected only one symbol color through a residents vote. The Hwasun symbol color is the mountain color. It is judged that color was come from the geographical features of many mountains and the attribute that native rate in this area is high. The color of Hwasun mountain is the color seen through at the entrance space of Hwasun and at the highest point in Hwasun area. It is a color seen at daylight of a clear autumn. By occasion of this study we expect that the developing process for gaining a representative or a symbol color by colorimetry of small town color as well as macroscopic color design in city or province, will be spread. Also Hopefully this research will be a good precedent of method to develop a small village"s color.
