The name of the 5･18 Uprising was used variously since 1980. This change was related with the historical perspectives on the 5･18 Uprising. The Korean government called it as the 5･18 Gwangju Democratic Movement since 1988, and the democratic and progressive camp called it as the 5･18 Gwangju Minjung Uprising.
Since the mid 1990s, the most of the democratic and progressive camp deleted the city name, ‘Gwangju’ from the name of the 5･18 Gawangju Minjung Uprising in favor of nationalization. This attempt influenced the government, and the government changed the 5･18 Gwangju Democratic Movement as the 5･18 Democratic Movement.
But I think that this decision is too political. I have three reasons for my argument. First, the nationalization of the 5･18 Uprising is related with the political and social background, not the name of the 5･18 Uprising. Second, the 5･18 Uprising has the high status in the world. Therefore, the name of the 5･18 Uprising must be made that it could be remembered by the foreigners more easily. Third, the name of the 5･18 Uprising needs to consult with the names of the other historical events.
The democratic and progressive camp prefers the title of the 5･18 Minjung Uprising to the 5･18 Democratic Uprising since the mid of 1990s. But the character dispute over the 5･18 Uprising has not finished yet. Therefore, it is not right that the name of the 5･18 Uprising is fixed as the 5･18 Minjung Uprising. It is more proper that the 5･18 Uprising is called as the 5･18 Gwangju Uprising.
