This study’s primary objective is clarified with semantic and grammatical properties of ‘V+在+一起’ structure in Modern Chinese.
First of all, Verbs used in form of ‘V+在+一起’ showed a limiting feature and can be classified into four types depending on classification about persistance and autonomy. The locatives ‘一起’ has different meanings respectively depending on these verbs.
Second, ‘一起’ is that representing the meaning place of the reference and used as a noun specific usage of ‘V+在+一起’ structure. Meaning of the locatives ‘一起’ is ‘multiple agent or patient are placed in any situation together in the same space, doing somethings.’ It is often used in the form of ‘NP(pl) +V+在+一起’ in the sentence.
Last, ‘V+在+一起’ has the structure of ‘Predicate-Object(V+在/一起)’. Corpus analysis results shows that the form of ‘V+在+了+一起’ has had many appearance than we expected. Of these, the proportion of one-syllable verb was more than twice the two-syllable verb. Also, it’s much more natural to read the ‘V+在+了/+一起’ compared to read the ‘V+在/+了+一起’. When we consider in these phenomena, ‘在’ can be assumed to have a much more closely related to the previous verbs than post objects.
